The contemporary Serbian music is developing at an impressive pace. The new big stars are already a fact and they open up entirely different, new horizons for the music business in our western neighbor. Since the energetic Maria Serifovic won the Eurovision song contest back in 2007 with the thrilling hit "Prayer," the Serbian music enjoys a new generation of fans in Bulgaria as well.
"Old love does not rust"
The Serbian music has deep roots in the Bulgarians’ souls. Bulgarians love the Serbian music. This has been so since the early days of the communism. Not only because it was different from what was on the Bulgarian stage back in time. In was an era when if a Bulgarian singer appeared on air with a skirt higher than where her knee was, she risked never being shown to the public again. At that time, her Serbian colleagues already knew that "sex is selling" the most and started getting the most out of it.
High-quality music, performed by talented performers with mastery, hustle and sex appeal - this was much typical for the Serbian "turbo-folk" in the 80's, and is now a characteristic of the contemporary Serbian songs.
The New Wave (vs. Old Guns)
It is the turn of the new wave of young and exciting stars like Leon, Teodora, also hip-hop and rap performers such as Korona and The Roman, THCF, and COBY, Rasta. Traditionally, long-legged gorgeous beauties are also on stage. Seka Aleksic, Katarina Gruić, Marina Viskovic – these are girls who can mess up every man's heart!
"The Old rifles" such as Sasha Matic and Lepa Brenna have not given up and continue to release a hit after hit, winning fans among the more advanced generations.
This is our Chart – The Top 60: Best Serbian Songs of 2018
The top spot in our ranking is for one of the most loved performers not only in Serbia, but also all around the Balkans. Some call him "the Serbian Andrea Bocelli," because, like the mega-star from Italy, Sasa is a very talented musician and is totally blind. Sasa has a twin brother - Deyan. Only a few days after they were born prematurely in this world and had to survive in an incubator, the two brothers lose their eyesight at the same time. The doctors still fail to find out why this has happened…
Recently, Sasha has visited Bulgaria again to take part in a big concert in Arena Armeec, together with Saban Saulic, Vesna Zmijanac and Tanja Savic. Previously, he appeared at The Slavi Show, where he was once again demonstrating his incredible talent, his wonderful sense of humour and his love for Bulgaria.
Thank you for the wonderful music, Sasa Matic!
"Legalna" (Legal) is the most successful single ever of the young Serbian rapper, Leon. After this one, he released two more joint singles - "Alal Vera" and "Lavlje Krzno", but his duo with Maya Berovic remains the favourite in the charts.
Hip-hop is currently on the top spot and of all charts in Serbia.
The 20-year-old Teodora Jehverovic is among the most recent young singers on the Serbian music scene. Her great breakthrough was her participation in the musical reality show "Zvezde Granda" in 2014-15, where she reached the final stage.
In September 2017 the singer started her participation in another reality show - "Zadruga".
There she got involved in a brief love affair with Anđelo Ranković and shared scandalous intimate details of her life. The singer lost her virginity at the age of 16 from a man with whom she had a one-year relationship. Then, she honestly confessed that she was involved in a trio with two men, also having both oral and anal sex. She also had a relationship with a woman back in time.
Before participating in Zadruga, she split with her boyfriend – the Croatian footballer Christian Ipsy.
So far KRISTIJAN GREJ is Teodora's biggest hit. But obviously we have to expect many extraordinary performances from the fiery blonde, both on the music scene and outside.
Undoubtedly, Rasta (Stefan Durich) is among the biggest Serbian hip-hop stars at the moment. As early as 2014, when he made a boom with “Kvasaki”, Rasta made a hit after a hit. Among his most famous releases are: Cavali, Habibi, Euforija, Hotel, and others.
He is doing well as a producer of his own label "Balkanton" (it has nothing to do with our Balkanton - the former state record company of Bulgaria).
In 2016, Rasta became involved with Anna Nikolic not only in a business plan (the famous singer is a Balkanton client) but also in a love affair. The couple married. They also have a daughter.
HOT! This piece of is so hot! The Serbian music sex symbol, Katarina Gruic, may ashame some American bounce star with her hips and legs movements. The song features a fast rhythm and also some latin elements. The singer once again arranged the creative duo Marina Tukakovich and Damir Handanovich for the lyrics and music of this hit that brings the spirit of Cuba, as Catharina herself says.
At the age of 58 and Lepa Brena is still sexy! In the video of the song, you will see the Queen of Turbo-Folk from an interesting angle. Still so "turbo" and so sexy! The video can remind you a little about one of the greatest videos of Shania Twain from 2003: "Man! I Feel Like a Woman! ". The Balkan version is just as nasty and catchy.
Do not miss, however, the song ranked in the next, 14th place. Bolis i ne prolazis is much more typical of Lepa Brenna, a love-dramatic style. A beautiful love story, delivered with a lot of feeling and style. Queen's older fans will surely fall on Bolis i ne prolazis!
14. Lepa Brena - Bolis i ne prolazis
The hit of the two rappers and Tanja Savic set YouTube on fire, collecting over 1 million views only in the first 2 days after it was released!
The talented rappers, Crown and Rimski, together with their producer Philip, managed to sense Tanya's sensuality and to upgrade it to the modern sound they have been selling for some time. Tanja Savic returned to stage more than a year ago with the song "Prostakuša", but this joint hip-hop project sent her on a completely different, even higher orbit.
The beautiful Emina Jahović is an epitome of modern, talented, Balkan star. She is a successful model, an actress, but mostly - a singer who releases to the public a hit after a hit. She has won a number of prestigious singing competitions with her talents from the very beginning of her career. Her glory has long gone beyond the borders of Serbia and the star has armies of fans in Turkey, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 2013, she organized an online "Name the Song" competition to ask her fans to choose the title of her new single. Hundreds of thousands participate in Facebook and Twitter. The singer's team selected two of the ideas: "U senkama isti" and "Ne plašim se". Then fans are asked to vote for either of the options. With 73% of the vote, the winner was "U senkama isti".
Then, new prestigious competitive victories followed and also another great recognition: Emina Jahovic was chosen as a judge in X Factor Adria - an edition of the famous music format for Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Macedonia.
She is married to the famous Turkish singer Mustafa Sandal.
We all remember the song "Prayer" by Marija Šerifović, with which she won the Eurovision song contest back in 2007. The Bulgarians then loved this song as if it was ours (and many young Bulgarians "rediscovered" the Serbian songs for themselves). So weird and still - so close it sounds to us. Here is where the dog is "buried", as they say. This is the reason why Bulgarians like Serbian music so much. Close-mindedness, similar language and the wonderful Balkan rhythms!
We will be glad to know your favourites of the modern Serbian songs. Make a Top Chart and share it with us in the comments.
